City in China
Dali is a city in China’s southwestern Yunnan province, on the shores of Erhai Lake. Its history stretches back to the kingdom of Nanzhao (8th century). The walled old city, from the Ming dynasty, contains traditional homes and towers from the Bai ethnic minority. Beyond the old city rise the Three Pagodas of Chong Sheng Temple, dating to the 9th century.

Nearby is the Guanyin Palace of Copper Rain (rebuilt in 1999), containing huge gilded statues of Buddhist deities, and the Jianji Great Bell of Nanzhao, a giant 1997 replica of an ancient bell, housed in its own tower. Other notable sites include the Dali Museum, containing a major ceramics collection and historic artefacts dating back to the Neolithic period. Dali Foreigner Street is a pedestrianized road lined with Western-style restaurants and bars. Dali is also known for the production of marble, handicrafts and tie-dye textiles.

A commercial centre in the 1300s, its old town encompasses cobblestone streets, canals and Central Market Square with shops and restaurants. The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (also known as Mount Yulong), with glaciers and 13 peaks, is traversed by cable cars, including a ride ascending to 4,500 meters. On the other side, the dramatic Tiger Leaping Gorge trail runs along the Upper Yangtze River. In town, the 33m-high Wangulou wooden pavilion stands atop Lion Hill and features Dongba designs. The Mu Mansion, the reconstructed home of the Naxi ruling family, showcases traditional halls and courtyards. Traditional music is performed on original instruments at the Naxi Concert Hall.
